<P>The type of cut, or more correctly, the panel layout for racing mainsails, can be subdivided into two main categories, depending on the rating rules and the aspect ratio of the sail.<BR></P></TD></TR>

<P><STRONG><BR><A href="" name=#HighRoach></A><FONT size=3>High roach main</FONT></STRONG></P>
<P>Hood proposes the high roach main on racing yachts with no restrictions as regards sail area and where the hull and rig design permits.<BR><BR>The substantial lengthening of the leech means a semi-elliptical plan can be adopted and so induced aerodynamic resistance can be minimised for the same load: that is, the boat is faster when close hauling!<BR><BR>The larger sail area also makes for better performance when running with the wind.<BR><BR>Great care is taken in the design of this sail from the structural standpoint, given the high loads in play and the absolute need to be able to control twist in the upper section of the leech.<BR><BR>The considerable length is supported by more full battens in the upper section, all of which are in carbon.<BR><BR>Carbon laminates are also normally used for the sailcloth, except for sailboats under 30'.</P></TD>

<P><STRONG><FONT face=Arial>IMS Bistar main</FONT></STRONG> <BR><BR><FONT face=Arial size=2>Hood proposes the IMS cut for racing yachts that compete with a rating<BR><BR>The mainsail girths are the maximum permissible without incurring a rating handicap. <BR><BR>A full batten at the head allows for better control of shape in the higher section.</FONT></P>
<P><FONT face=Arial size=2>Carbon laminates are generally proposed for sailboats above 30' and Kelvar laminates for smaller ones, but there's a wide range of solutions to suit different budgets.</FONT></P>
